Fractures around the shoulder, most commonly involving the proximal humerus, can significantly affect hand and arm function. They are common in older adults with osteoporosis or after direct falls onto the shoulder.

Symptoms and Complications

• Intense pain at the shoulder or upper arm
• Swelling and widespread bruising (often extending down to the elbow)
• Inability to lift the arm
• Potential injury to nerves or blood vessels

Treatment Philosophy

• Non-surgical immobilization (sling) for stable fractures
• Locking plate fixation for displaced fractures
• Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement for complex fractures in older patients
• Early-stage physical therapy to prevent frozen shoulder
