What is a Meniscus Injury?
The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of tough, rubbery cartilage that acts as a shock absorber between
your shinbone and thighbone. A meniscus tear is one of the most common knee injuries.
Causes and Symptoms
- Traumatic injury during sports activities
- Degenerative changes in older adults
- Sensation of a "pop" at the time of injury
- Difficulty straightening the knee fully
- Knee locking or catching during movement
Treatment and Recovery
Treatment depends on the type, size, and location of the tear:
- Conservative care (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation)
- Physical therapy for strengthening and stabilization
- Arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (removing the torn part)
- Arthroscopic meniscus repair (stitching the tear back together)
