About Femur Fractures
The femur (thighbone) is the strongest bone in your body. Because it is so strong, it usually takes a
lot of force to break it. Femoral shaft fractures are typically caused by high-energy collisions,
such as motor vehicle accidents.
Classification of Fractures
- Shaft fractures (the long, straight part of the bone)
- Distal femur fractures (the end part near the knee joint)
- Comminuted fractures (the bone is shattered into several pieces)
- Open fractures (the bone has broken through the skin)
Surgical Care and Management
Most femoral fractures require surgery to heal properly:
- Intramedullary nailing (the standard of care for shaft fractures)
- Locking plates and screws for fractures near the knee
- External fixation in cases of severe soft tissue injury
- Intensive post-operative rehabilitation for walking restoration
