A hip fracture is a serious injury, with complications that can be life-threatening. The risk of hip fracture rises with age, often due to osteoporosis or falls. In younger individuals, they are typically the result of high-impact trauma.

Types of Fractures

• Femoral neck fractures
• Intertrochanteric hip fractures
• Subtrochanteric fractures

Emergency Care and Surgery

Most hip fractures require surgical repair or replacement within 24 to 48 hours:

• Internal fixation (using metal screws, nails, or plates to hold the bone)
• Partial hip replacement (Hemiarthroplasty)
• Total hip replacement
• Post-operative rehabilitation and fracture prevention
