What is Avascular Necrosis?
Avascular necrosis (AVN), also called osteonecrosis, is the death of bone tissue due to a lack of
blood supply. Over time, it can lead to tiny breaks in the bone and eventually cause the bone to
collapse.
Stages and Symptoms
- Early stages may show no symptoms
- Pain that starts when putting weight on the joint
- Pain that becomes more constant, even when lying down
- Severe groin pain if the femoral head (hip bone) collapses
- Significant loss of joint range and function
Modern Solutions
Treatment depends on how far the bone tissue has degenerated:
- Core decompression (surgical procedure to reduce pressure and promote blood flow)
- Bone grafting to support the area of damaged bone
- Total Hip Replacement for cases where the joint has collapsed
- Close monitoring and specialized medication in early stages
Early diagnosis is critical for saving the joint
